EMVY Forum - Young People, Employment and Enterprise
Youth unemployment and underemployment rose sharply in the UK throughout the recent recession. Actions taken to address this issue appear to gaining momentum alongside a general but gradual economic recovery; with numbers of unemployed young people reducing. However, competition for jobs remains fierce and fears of a disconnect between the aspirations of our young people and the skills needs of the East Midlands growth sectors endures. As a result the employment potential of our young people remains a key issue for government and the economic growth agenda.
This event takes a positive look at the direction of youth policy in England and the range of initiatives and interventions developing as a result. With a focus on what has and is working well in the East Midlands; the aim is to ‘connect the dots’ in order to improve pathways for young people into employment and enterprise.
The purpose of this event is to analyse the current state of play in relation to youth employment and unemployment, the direction of travel in policy and interventions and the role that the VCS can play in achieving positive outcomes.
The event will incorporate a range of different perspectives including the current position on youth unemployment across England and the East Midlands, national policy in relation to young people and employment, opportunities to build stronger relationships with our local growth sectors and examples of successful interventions from across the region having a positive impact.
The event will be interactive throughout with lots of opportunity for discussion, learning from local experience and to consider the forward role of the VCS.
