Volunteering

Volunteering activity is the bedrock of the VCS and this is a time for dramatic change for volunteering as it is given a more prominent role in the Big Society agenda.

The Citizenship Survey shows that 41% of the UK population volunteer formally once a year. It is estimated that an even larger number of people volunteer informally, by giving unpaid help to people who are not relatives (outside any formal setting).

Based on a survey of volunteering across the East Midlands carried out in September 2010, around 15,000 people have been supported into formal volunteering roles in the last year with more than 20,000 volunteering opportunities still available.

One East Midlands supports the England Volunteering Council (EVDC) in the region, which aims to capture the intelligence of a broad range of organisations in the region and act as a powerful lobby to steer government policy.

Two new volunteer websites

Two new websites have recently been set up by volunteers to help people advertise and find opportunities to help out.

Volunteer centres and sport volunteering

Volunteering England has published an evaluation of the 2011-12 Regional Sporting Champions project. Funded by Sport England, the project worked with eight volunteer centres, including Voluntary Action LeicesterShire, to increase the level of support for sports organisations in their local area.

V-Base 3.0 software

YouthNet has announced the roll out of the V-Base 3.0 software to Volunteer Centres. The roll out will take place on a regional basis, with organisations receiving training before the upgrade.

Young Person’s Volunteering Fund

The Young Person’s Volunteering Fund has been created to assist young people aged 14-25 to volunteer their time to create or enhance recreation or leisure facilities that can be enjoyed by the wider community.

Library volunteering opportunities

National charity The Reading Agency has announced that it is working with local authority library services across the UK to create a Youth Innovation Network of librarians who will help generate thousands of new volunteering opportunities in public libraries for young people aged 11-25 years.

Volunteer centre cuts survey results

A survey of volunteer centres in England has found that over half that receive funding from the local authority had it cut in the past year. 52 per cent experienced cuts of up to 80 per cent, with half of those losing at least a fifth of local authority funding. The average cut was 25 per cent. Only 5 per cent received more money this year than they did in 2011/12, and 42 per cent received the same amount.
