Consultation on gift aid small donations scheme

Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has opened a consultation on the proposed gift aid small donations scheme, which will allow charities to claim gift aid on £5,000 worth of small donations each year without needing to submit a gift aid declaration signed by the donor.

The measure was announced in last year's Budget, when the Chancellor stated that it would apply to donations of up to £10. This year's Budget confirmed that the move was still in the pipeline and doubled the limit for each individual donation to £20. The change is intended to take effect from 6 April 2013.

Call for evidence from Charities Act review

Questionnaires have been issued by the Office for Civil Society, as part of the review of the Charities Act by Lord Hodgson, asking whether there are too many charities, whether charities are accountable enough to the public and whether there should be a statutory definition of public benefit.

The two general questionnaires, one for charities and one for the public, are supplemented by shorter questionnaires on nine specific areas, including the definition of charity, the role of the Charity Commission and charity mergers. Both the charity and public questionnaires ask:

Office for Civil Society launches VCS web survey

The Office for Civil Society, in conjunction with the Big Lottery Fund, has launched a survey looking at how voluntary and community groups and use websites and social media for networking and learning.

Tender to deliver services supporting VCS in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council is looking to commission providers to deliver services that will support the VCS in Nottingham City, including helping organisations to be sustainable, grow and meet changing need.

It is expected that the support services should be in place by 1 April 2012.

Nottingham City is composed of a diverse group of VCS organisations working together to meet the needs of Nottingham City's citizens. Organisations that may require support may include play services, counselling services, BME and refugee services, LGBT services and women's groups.

First audit of Big Society launched

The first audit of Big Society, and the effectiveness of policies to shift power from government to civil society, has been launched and is expected to be published early in 2012. Think tank Civil Exchange, research organisation Democratic Audit and social policy communications group DHA, will conduct the audit after consulting with government, academics and others about how to gauge the effectiveness or achievements of the social policy.
