Use this page to reflect on what and how you are doing things. There are links to more information and support that may assist you for each of the areas.

  1. If you don't have a clear mission (ie overall what do you want to achieve) then you may find the sections on 'Mission' and 'Strategic Planning' helpful.
  2. If you aren't clear what trading is and why you might want to do it then you may find the sections on 'What is Trading' and 'Strategic Planning' helpful.
  3. If you have never sold anything (goods or services) before than you may find the sections on 'Case Studies' and 'What is Trading' helpful.
  4. Do you know if your organisation is able to trade and there are no issues for you to start to trade? If not, you may want to look at the sections on 'Structures' and 'Tax issues'.
  5. If you don't have any ideas for trading then you may find the section on 'How to Choose the Best ideas' helpful.
  6. Have you thought through the feasibility and viability of your trading ideas? If not, you may want to look at the sections on 'Feasibility Studies' and 'Business Planning'.
  7. Do you think that your organisation is ready to take on trading i.e. do you have a good management structure and 'staffing', reasonably financially stability, good processes and policies in place and the right attitude? If not, you may want to look at the sections on 'Are You Ready For Trading', 'Risk' and 'People'.
  8. Do you think that you have the skills and knowledge to take the idea forward? If not, you may want to look at the sections on 'Are You Ready For Trading', 'Are You An Entrepreneur' and 'People'.
  9. Do you know who your customers would be? If not, you may want to look at the section on 'Market Research'.
  10. Have you done any market testing? If not, you may want to look at the section on 'Market Research'.
  11. Do you know if there are others doing what you want to do - either competitors or others elsewhere that you can learn from? If not, you may want to look at the section on 'Market Research'.
  12. Have you started to put some actual figures together and thought through how many units you would need to sell at a reasonable price to break even? If not, you may want to look at the sections on 'Full Cost Recovery and Pricing' and 'Forecasting Costs'.
  13. Do you need money or, for example, a building to allow you to start your trading idea and if so do you know how you might acquire it/them? If not, you may want to look at the sections on 'Financing Your Ideas' and 'Premises and Equipment'.
  14. Have you developed a business plan? If not, you may want to look at the section on 'Business Planning'.
  15. Have you involved and do you have the support of all your board/management committee, staff, volunteers and others for your ideas? If not, you may want to look at the section on 'People Skills'.
  16. Are key people in your organisation risk averse and resistant to change? If there are, you may want to look at the sections on 'Risk and  Change'.
  17. Have you thought about the risks associated with trading and how are you seeking to minimise these? If not, you may want to look at the section on 'Risk'.
  18. If relevant, do you know how to sell to and contract with the public sector? If you do, you may want to look at the section on 'Selling To The Public Sector'.
