Operating principles for JSNAs and JSHWSs

The Health and Social Care Act 2012 establishes health and wellbeing boards as committees in upper-tier local authorities, giving duties to health and wellbeing board members to develop Joint Strategic Needs Assessments (JSNAs) and Joint Health and Wellbeing Strategies (JHWSs).

The statutory guidance to outline the duties and powers relating to JSNAs and JHWSs is due to be published before the end of 2012. In the meantime, the NHS Confederation has published a paper providing additional support to the guidance, which combines:

  • Outputs produced by the health and wellbeing board learning set
  • Findings from a national stakeholder workshop held in April 2012
  • Additional information provided by the Department of Health.
