UK Civil Society Almanac 2012 published

NCVO has published its biannual UK Civil Society Almanac 2012, a comprehensive study of the macro-economics of the civil society in the UK, covering 2008/09 and 2009/10. Key findings from the Almanac include:

  • There were an estimated 900,000 civil society organisations in the UK in 2010 with a combined income of £170.4billion and controlled assets worth £228billion
  • 163,763 of these organisations were general charities serving an estimated 124.9million beneficiaries
  • These charities' total voluntary income reduced from £16billion to £13.9billion between 2007/08 and 2008/09
  • Rates of formal volunteering declined during the recession, from 43 per cent of people formally volunteering once a year in 2007/08 to 39 per cent of people in 2010/11
  • An estimated 765,000 people work in voluntary sector organisations, making up 2.7 per cent of the UK workforce
  • 45 per cent of registered charities identify themselves as a social enterprise.
