The Charities Evaluation Service (CES) and the Jargonbusters group has launched a new website dedicated to providing clear and simple definitions of the key terms used to describe what organisations do and the difference their work makes.

Free advice on property issues for not-for-profit organisations

The Ethical Property Foundation, a charity which provides free advice on property issues to not-for-profit organisations, is expanding its services to cover the whole of England from January 2012. The independent charity was established in 2005 with the aim of making the best use of property for society and the environment, by providing advice to charities and community groups on property issues.

Guidance on charity business rates relief

Full business rates are due on empty commercial properties that remain unoccupied after three months. However, charities occupying commercial property qualify for a mandatory 80% discount on business rates, provided the property is used wholly or mainly for charitable purposes. Local authorities also have the discretion to grant the remaining 20% as a further discount.

Government considers charging volunteers for criminal records checks

The government is considering charging volunteers to use the portable criminal records checking system, due to come into force in 2013.

Under the system, laid out in the Protection of Freedoms Bill, which is currently before parliament, there would be two types of criminal records check, a one-off check and a portable one based on a continuously updated criminal records database, allowing an individual to work or volunteer for a number of organisations.

New group aims to inspire sector impact

Twelve organisations, including NCVO and Acevo, have come together to form the 'inspiring impact' group, which plans to provide collective leadership on impact measurement in the charity sector over the next decade. The group aims to make the next ten years a decade of high impact, and has developed a 12-month plan to set off five goals, which will define the group. The five goals are:

Tender to deliver services supporting VCS in Nottingham

Nottingham City Council is looking to commission providers to deliver services that will support the VCS in Nottingham City, including helping organisations to be sustainable, grow and meet changing need.

It is expected that the support services should be in place by 1 April 2012.

Nottingham City is composed of a diverse group of VCS organisations working together to meet the needs of Nottingham City's citizens. Organisations that may require support may include play services, counselling services, BME and refugee services, LGBT services and women's groups.

Government confirms VCS VAT exemption on shared services

As part of the Chancellor's autumn statement, the government has confirmed it will introduce a VAT exemption for VCS organisations that wish to share back-office services, removing the additional VAT charge that can arise when some organisations collaborate. The exemption will apply to services shared between VAT exempt bodies, including charities and universities. A requirement that charities who want to share services must set up a separate legal entity to do so was opposed by the sector but has been retained in the government proposal.
