Skills Third Sector developing new interactive tool for sector

Funded by the government following consultation with the VCS, Skills Third Sector is developing LINKS, a new interactive tool that allows sector organisations to search online for formal and informal training opportunities. The tool will aim to:

Department of Health strategic partner programme extended until 2013

The Department of Health has announced that it is extending its £3.5million strategic partner programme, which directly funds 25 charities within 18 consortia, including One East Midlands through Regional Voices, to 2013.

£16.8million fund for advice services

The Cabinet Office has announced a £16.8million fund for free advice services in England, to be delivered by the Big Fund, the non-lottery arm of the Big Lottery Fund.

The fund will open for applications by the end of November and will provide grants to organisations providing debt, welfare benefits, employment and housing advice services. Applicants will have to provide advice in at least one of the four areas and be able to evidence public funding cuts of at least 10 per cent for those advice service areas from central and local government sources in 2011/12.

Localism Bill receives Royal Assent

The Localism Bill has received royal assent and, as the Localism Act, will grant new rights to communities to bid for land and run local authority services. The legislation will require local authorities to maintain lists of 'assets for community value'. If any of these assets comes up for sale, the local authority must allow a suspension of six months on the sale of the asset, so that local groups have time to put together a bid to take it over for community benefit.

First audit of Big Society launched

The first audit of Big Society, and the effectiveness of policies to shift power from government to civil society, has been launched and is expected to be published early in 2012. Think tank Civil Exchange, research organisation Democratic Audit and social policy communications group DHA, will conduct the audit after consulting with government, academics and others about how to gauge the effectiveness or achievements of the social policy.

Review of Charities Act 2006

Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society, has announced that Conservative peer Lord Hodgson of Astley Abbotts will lead a wide-ranging review of the Charities Act 2006. The review will consider issues including the role of the Charity Commission, the effectiveness of the charity tribunal, the success of the Fundraising Standards Board and the licensing regime for public charitable collections. Hodgson, president of the NCVO, has previously led the Big Society Deregulation Taskforce, the government-commissioned review of red tape in the voluntary sector.
