£50million Growing Places Fund announced

Community volunteering medal reintroduced

The British Empire Medal (BEM), awarded as part of the Queen"s Honours system to British citizens making a difference in their communities until 1992, will be reintroduced in the Diamond Jubilee Honours list in June 2012.

Associated with the Order of the British Empire (OBE), the BEM was established in the same year, 1917. It was originally split into two medals, one for exceptional civil service and one for military gallantry, and was awarded to those who did not qualify to be made a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE).

VCS to deliver reforms for children with special needs and disabilities

The Children's Minster Sarah Teather has announced contracts for VCS organisations to help deliver key reforms to support children with special educational needs and disabilities, and their parents. The Department for Education is providing around £6million a year for two years for the contracts, which will see the contractors:

Public decide on five new Big Lottery Fund programmes

Following a Channel 4 series and an Ipsos Mori poll of 2,000 people, the Big Lottery Fund has created five new funding streams within its Millennium Now programme. This is the first time the funder has taken its cue directly from public opinion without first proposing options.
